Madhuri's loss is Tabu's gain Very few in Bollywood know that Tabu's much-sought-after role in Hum Saath Saath Hain was first offered to Madhuri Dixit. Which wasn't surprising, since the Madhuri-Sooraj Barjatya had made magic in Hum Aapke Hain Koun? But the Dixit dame had refused, since the HSSH role was minisculine compared to the HAHK one. Anyway, Madhuri's loss was Tabu's gain, and Tabu is not complining, seeing that HSSH is having such a record initial draw. Even for the Mahesh Manjrekar directed Astitva (a Hindi-Marathi bilingual), it was Mads who had been first choice but Tabu stepped in later. And only because Mads was apprehensive about playing an aging mother of a grown up son in that movie. Tabs has played the role with such conviction that she has earned rave reviews for it. And now that The Dixit dame has gone and got married, and is busy wrapping up all pending projects, guess who is the person most likely to profit from her impending retirement? Happy days are here for the terrific Tabu!
Sush enters the big league at last The supporting roles in Biwi No.1 and Sirf Tum have helped Sushmita Sen get noticed. And how! The long-legged beauty has stepped into Rajiv Rai's next mega starrer, and is hoping that she has finally moved into the same big league in which arch-rival Aishwarya Rai has moved into, post-Taal. The director, who specializes in multi-starrers, snapped up Sush when his first two choices Sonali and Tabu started having date problems with the extended shooting schedule. The yet-untitled venture stars Rai favourites Naseeruddin Shah, Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Bobby Deol, all of whom have worked in one or the other of the director's successful movies (Tridev, Mohra and Gupt) before. Now maybe the Sen-sational beauty would be able to leave behind her days of playing second fiddle to Karisma Kapoor -or even to a nobody like Priya Gill!
Sunil Shetty ready to strike back
Just when the trade pundits were all ready to write the obituary of Sunil Shetty's career, the muscleman is striking back with a vengeance. And this time he's making all the right career moves. Realizing that the pure action movie is currently out of fashion, he has opted for a change of image. Following the lead of Ajay Devgan, who made a successful change from action to soft roles in Pyar To Hona Hi Tha and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Sunil went in for a change of genres in Gulzar's Hu Tu Tu. The movie didn't do that well, but it helped the desi Arnold get noticed for his histrionics rather than his muscles. And helped him bag many prestigious projects, all of whom are to be released within the next year or so. Hum Panchi Ek Daal Ke, Radhesham Sitaram, Ek Hindustani, Kashmakash, Haadsa, Hera Pheri ,Maa Tujhe Salaam should be ready for release by the millennium. And Rajiv Rai's next, Ram Gopal Varma's next, Ashok Honda's next, Kundan Shah's next, D. Rama Naidu's next, Vimal Kumar's next, the next two of Time Magnetics, JP Dutta's next - the list is endless and getting bigger by the day. All helping the Shetty to move back into the main league.
