The hits and misses of 2005
Year 2005 was not that bad for the Hindi film industry. Many small and big budget films profitably made hullabaloo this year. Many more bombed at the box-office too. Let's have a glance on the major releases that flowed through the year.

January 2005
Like any other year, the first releases of 2005 - Pooja Bhatt's Rog and Satish Kaushik's Vaada too proved out to be non-starters at the box-office corroborating the industry myth that the first week is jinxed. Fortunately, this month didn't have to wait for long to get the first hit of the year. Page 3, a small budget film by Madhur Bhandarkar enjoyed the status of the first hit of the year, whereas the big budget film Kisna directed by Subhash Ghai that released on the same date was a big time disappointment. Films like Padmashree Laloo Prasad Yadav directed by Mahesh Manjrekar, Elaan by Vikram Bhat and Insan badly bombed on the box office.

February 2005
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black won outstanding critical appreciation but didn't won as much audiences and turned out to be an above average success. Boney Kapoor's conventional flick Bewafaa worked in the absence of any major opposition. Kushan Nandy's small flick Humdum despite being a fresh love comedy missed the audiences attention due to lack of star value. Jurm, Sheesha and Shabd went unnoticed.

March 2005
March proved to be musically hit with Bhatt camp's first release of the year Zeher directed by debutante Mohit Suri. People hardly had any expectations from Socha Na Tha that introduced Abhay Deol but that very fact worked positively for the film. My Brother Nikhil won brilliant critical appreciation. Tango Charlie and Karam were duds.

April 2005
This month witnessed a  semi-hit with Vipul Shah's Waqt - A Race Against Time. Amitabh and Akshay's father-son chemistry clicked to the audiences and film did some good business. Again it was a good year for the debutant actress Sneha Ullal. Her first movie Lucky - No Time For Love with Salman Khan took a bumper opening and proved to above average fare. Karan Johar's Kaal took a decent initial for the star value and novel concept of a wildlife thriller. Kamal Hassan couldn't charm the Hindi viewers in Mumbai Xpress despite it being a hilarious flick. Some small budget films like Hazaron Khwaishe Aisi, Kuch Meetha Ho Jaaye and Khamosh - Khauff Ki Raat banged at the box office.

May 2005
Shaad Ali's Bunty Aur Babli turned out to be the big hit of the summer vacations. The first time pairing of Amitabh-Abhishek, the Abhishek-Rani chemistry and Aishwarya in Kajrare over-shadowed its other flaws. Ekta Kapoor's Kya Kool Hain Hum was one of the few well-made sex-comedies of Hindi cinema and clicked in a big way with the Indian audiences. Sunny Deol's much hyped Jo Bole So Nihal didn't work in the north either and on the contrary resulted in communal disharmony. Ajay Devgan's mentally challenged character in Main Aisa Hi Hoon was rejected downright. Movies on vision Naina and Nazar released simultaneously. While the former gained critical acclaim for Urmila's performance, the latter did gain any viewer vision.

June 2005
In spite of having big releases, June was not so happening except Pradeep Sarkar's Parineeta, a period film which was done contemporary in its style. It received moderate success. India's entry to the Oscars, Paheli made an exit from theatres after the Shahrukh euphoria faded. 'D' hyped as the real life story of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim ame in as a reworked version of Satya and Company and failed to make money. Rekha and Mallika Sherawat were real heartbreakers in Bach Ke Rehna Re Baba while Khalid Mohammed's Silsiilay completed his flop trilogy after Fiza and Tehzeeb.

July 2005
This month was ruled by Bachchans. An angry old man Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek's onscreen chemistry in the movie Sarkar was mind-blowing and much better than Bunty and Babli. Big B's next father-son based Virrudh directed by Mahesh Manjrekar failed to create magic at box office. The multi-starrer Dus met with lukewarm success while David Dhawan's noisy comedy Maine Pyar Kyun Kiya become a hit. Seher a real life story, based on mafia failed to create magic.

August 2005
Aamir Khan's return to the big screen after four years in the biographical period film Mangal Pandey - The Rising failed to attract audiences. It was not that interesting in terms of the buzz it generated. Bobby Deol second Barsaat had a similar fate like his debut film Barsaat. This time even sexy sirens like Priyanka Chopra and Bipasha Basu failed to attract audiences. Boney Kapoor got a hit with No Entry after 8 long years and the film turned out to be one of the biggest hits of the year. The small budget Iqbal, an offbeat film by Mukta arts, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor won the best of reviews. My Wife's Murder from Ram Gopal Varma camp made a quick exit.

September 2005
Based on live-in relationships Salaam Namaste turned up as the second hit from the Yashraj banner after Bunty Aur Babli. The Indian audiences couldn't digest Chocolate. Smallies like Ramji Londonwaley, Pyaar Main Twist, Siskiyaan, Kal - Yesterday and Tomorrow and James bombed at box office. Anupam Kher came up with his career-best performances in Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara that worked only in the multiplex circuit. Romesh Sharma's comeback film as a director and the launch of his son Karan Sharma in Dil Jo Bhi Kahey failed despite the presence of Amitabh Bachchan.

October 2005
Hanuman, India's first full-length animation film had its own charismatic appeal with the audiences. Ekta Kapoor's Koi Aap Sa couldn't come anywhere close to the success of Kyaa Kool Hai Hum. Rajpal Yadav starrer Main Meri Patni Aur Woh was a cute and honest film but the honesty didn't paid well.

November 2005
This festive season of Diwali was a perfect releasing time for films by big directors like David Dhavan and Priyadarshan. Priyadarshan released two movies with completely divergent themes on the same day - the serious love story Kyon Ki and the mindless comedy Garam Masala. However the audiences were willing to accept only the comedy that had turned Priyadarshan forte by now. David Dhavan didn't have a very happy diwali with his multi-starrer Shaadi No 1, Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena was rejected. Akbar Khan's historical Taj Mahal finally made it to the theatres after almost four years in the making, but didn't work more than four days. Deewane Huye Pagal in spite having a good star cast failed to hit the box office.

December 2005
Apaharan was released with the maximum number of prints and worked best in Bihar and north eastern territories where the movie was set. Home Delivery couldn't deliver. Yashraj's third release this year, Neal 'n' Nikki wasn't as appealing as the earlier two. Ek Ajnabee was slick but didn't click. Kalyug was the surprise packet and yet another hit from the Bhatt camp. Rohan Sippy's Bluffmaster was appreciated for its execution but not many were happy with its unusual climax. Mr Ya Miss, neither attracted Mr nor Miss.

The fate of Mahesh Manjrekar's Vaah! Life Ho To Aisi, Suneel Darshan's Dosti - Friends Forever and John Matthew Matthan's upcoming Shikhar will be decided in the coming weeks.
