TRADE TRIVIA
Boney Kapoor's Judaai has in the initial stages, behaved as much the same way as the original Telugu version of which it is a remake had behaved. It started on a very, very lukewarm note and was even dismissed as a disaster by the entire trade but collections picked up from the second week onwards. Shubhlagnam, that's the name of the Telugu original, had been pronounced a miserable flop on the first 12 or 13 days after which its collections zoomed up and the film went on to become a super-duper hit. No doubt, Boney does not seem to have that kind of luck, but nevertheless,
Judaai is an earning proposal for its various distributors. Yes, in the overseas circuit, it has broken several records. Usually, Hindi films are screened in the USA and Canada on weekends only but looking to the craze for Judaai, there were shows on weekdays too.
Mahesh Bhatt has perhaps regained his touch to a certain extent with Tamanna or so people say. A poignant story of a eunuch who adopts a female child he finds in a dust-bin, Tamanna delves into various social issues like female infanticide and gender discrimination. Tamanna marks Pooja Bhatt's debut as a producer and its success has only strengthened her desire to make meaningful films within the commercial framework. The tax exemption in several states has helped the film pick up and the number of prints have been doubled in almost all the states.
How risky it is to make films with newcomers is borne out by the dismal performance of Saawan Kumar's Salma Pe Dil Aagaya. Although Ayub Khan is not a newcomer, he isn't a hot star too. Paired with Ayub as Salma is Saadika, the heroine of Saawan Kumar's own earlier bomb, Sanam Harjai. Anyway, in spite of having a popular music score, nobody's heart went out to Salma. Consequently, the film is a total loss for its distributors of each and every territory. It's a different matter that Saawan himself had to release the film in sosme circuits due to lack of buyers.
Maybe Sanjay Kapoor should try his hand at direction because flop stars have often made top directors. Instances: Subhash Ghai, Shekhar Kapur. The latest Sanjay Kapoor starrer Auzaar, couldn't pull through even despite the presence of Salman Khan. The racy music may have helped the film get a excellent opening everywhere, but once the audiences realised, there was precious little in the film other than the songs, collections took a dip rather fast. The reasonable price at which Auzaar had been sold to its distributors is about the only solace to them. Salman's brother, Sohail Khan, who made his debut as director with Auzaar, would have to now take more care in his second film, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, which he is directing for the Khans' own home banner. Maybe, papa Salim Khan can help his sons with the scripting of the film. Because if there was anything that was lacking badly in Auzaar, it was a good script. Yes, who was really good, besides Salman, that is --was Nirmal Pandey.
Too much of anything is bad. And imagine, if you have too much of comedy! David Dhawan had two releases in three weeks -- Judwaa and Hero No.1. Although both are already super-hits, Judwaa scored if only because it came first among the two. Barely had the audience laughed their guts out in Judwaa than came Hero No.1 with David Dhawan's favourite No.1, Govinda. Judwaa's super success proved that David can make it without Govinda too (Judwaa stars Salman Khan) and Hero No.1 drove home the point that the magical combination of Govinda and David does not guarantee a hit but does guarantee a success, at least.
Nana Patekar has reason to tighten his collar. His Yeshwant has also found universal appeal, disproving the theory that Nana is a saleable name in Maharashtra only. Of course, it's a Nana fare, it should have hard-hitting dialogues, not a dumb Nana as in Khamoshi. Amitabh Bachchan's Mrityudaata was to have been released on the same day as Rakesh Roshan's Koyla. But AB, at the last moment, decided to postpone Mrityudaata. Now Koyla will be followed by Mrityudaata.
Vinod Khanna, Hema Malini and Anjala
in Vinod Khanna Productions' Himalaya PutraThe coming days will be days of testing time for Vinod Khanna's son, Akshaye. Two of his films are due for release -his launch vehicle, Himalay Putra and J.P. Dutta's Border. Will he prove to be a chip of the old block?
