It was the year of surprises. The year witnessed some of the unexpected successes via Phool Aur Kaante, Izzat, Saathi, Maa and Aye Milan Ki Raat .
The entire year was ruled by music and love story . Music was the real superstar of the year. Nadeem-Sharavan are the top music directors. The three blockbusters - Saajan, Sanam Bewafa and Phool Aur Kaante were boasted by the their super-hit music.The success ratio of 1991 is much better compared to the previous year. 1991 witnessed around 30 successes according to trade guide editor, Taran Adarsh.
Saajan, Phool Aur Kaante and Sanam Bewafa are the only Super Duper Hits of 1991.
Saajan sold at 40 lakh did a business of 2 crore in bombay and 1.5 crore elsewhere making it the top hit of the year. Its tops in Bombay, Delhi-UP, Bengal and South India.
Phool Aur Kaante sold at low price of 15 lakhs and it is doing a business of 1 crore per territory,it stars newcomers. It is doing fantastic business in C.P, C.I and Gujarat circuits.
Sanam Bewafa sold at reasonable price of 20 lakhs did a business of 1.5 crore in Delhi-UP, Nizam and 90 Lakh elsewhere.
The above average films were Narsimha, Hafta Bandh, Bhabhi and Pyar Ka Devta while Karz Chukana Hai, Banjaran, Ramgarh Ke Sholay, Benaam Baadshah, Fateh, Prahar and Saugandh were the average films of the year.
The notable flops the year were Ajooba, Akayla, Love, Indrajeet Yodha, Farishtay, Do Matwale, Qurbani Rang Layegi,Afsana Pyar Ka, Dushman Devta and Ghar Parivar.
Top Draws Hero and Heroines.
Among the hero, the year belongs to the young superstar Salman Khan who made big with 4 hits this year biz : Saajan, Sanam Bewafa, Kurbaan and Patthar Ke Phool as an against one flop Love in which he gave a powerful performance.
Sanjay Dutt is yet another action sta whose Yodha, Do Matwale and Qurbaani Rang Layegi were disasters but Fateh did average business and then he bounced backed with the blockbuster success of Saajan and finally gave a solo hit Sadak.
Jackie Shroff a hot seller with the success of Izzat , 100 Days and Hafta Bandh while Akayla Lakshmanrekha tanked badly at the box-office.
Megastar Amitabh Bachchan had a hit Hum which took an earth-shattering initial but it was followed by three collosal disasters via Ajooba, Akayla and Indrajeet.
Teenage heartthrob Aamir Khan had one hit via Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin as against one dud Afsana Pyar Ka.
Sunny Deol, who was considered as the next no. 1 previous year gave three flops Yodha,Vishnu Deva and Shankara but Narsimha took an unprecedented initial and proved to be a saving grace for him.
Among the heroines, the year belonged to the new superstar Madhuri Dixit whose Saajan proved to be the biggest hit of the year while 100 days is a hit and Pyar Ka Devta is an above average fare.
Newcomer Pooja Bhatt made a super debut with Sadak and Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin as both proved to be hits at the box-office.
Jaya Pradha gave a hit Maa in which she gave a superlative perform as against two disasters Farishtay and Indrajeet.
Rekha made big with female oriented hit Phool Bane Angaraay despite a lot of negativity against her due to her husband committed suicide and the entire media and industry is blamed her , still she made big with Phool Bane Angaraay.
Banjaran proved to be saving grace for the superstar Sridevi while Lamhe, Farishtay and Garajna proved to stumbled block .
Juhi Chawla had a moderate year as her all the three starrers Benaam Baadshah, Bhabhi and Karz Chukana Hai performing average at the box-office.
